Yes, I can make NFL picks, too

Print Article

OK, Rob Lucas. When talking trash in your latest picks column(http://tinyurl.com/rob-s-column) , you have touched a nerve. Bringing up the holding call on the field goal while somehow missing out on the botched call that had the Packers recovering a fumble deep in Saints territory on a kickoff was egregious.

A Bears fan somehow talking trash after the events of the past two seasons is even more.

So how does this reporter respond? How else? By beating the pants (not literally, thankfully) off you in the NFL picks.

Without further ado, here they are.

Packers (-7) at Colts. I love the Packers here. I can't believe they won't put up under 27 or so points. They seemed to get on track last week, albeit against a real bad New Orleans defense. The coaching thing with Indy will certainly not help them. I feel good about the Pack, even with the number. Packers 31, Colts 21.

Falcons (-3) At Washington. Interesting game here. Boy that Skins defense is pretty bad. Atlanta didn't impress last week at home. Do they bounce back? Three sure isn't a big number. I would lean toward Atlanta here. Falcons 24, Redskins 16.

Steelers (-3) vs. Philly. I really like the Steelers at home on this one. I'm not a Philly believer at all. I don't trust that team to go win on the road. Steelers 27, Eagles 23.

Giants (-9) vs. Cleveland. If the Giants weren't so schizophrenic, this would be easy I think. Nine is a pretty large number, but they should be able to cover that against a real bad Cleveland team. They are coming off a real bitter loss at Philly, too. Giants 31, Browns 20.

Vikings (-6) vs. Tennessee. No reason to think that the Titans go in there and win, right? Other than the Vikes perhaps due for a regression? I think Matt Hasselbeck peforms just fine, and the Titans keep it close. Vikings 20, Titans 16.

Bengals (-3) vs. Dolphins. Interesting game here. Dolphins sure showed something last week in a tough environment in Arizona before blowing it. What do we really know about Cincy? They got pounded by the Ravens opening week, then beat the Browns by a touchdown coming off a short week. Nice road wins at Washington and Jacksonville. Really kind of an enigmatic team. Their three wins have come by an average of 10.5 points. Bengals 28, Dolphins 20.

Ravens (-6) at Chiefs. No real chance for a KC upset here I don't believe.  Arrowhead used to be so nasty to go to, but they have lost by an average of 16.5 points in going 0-2 at home. Ravens 24, Chiefs 13.

Panthers (-3) vs. Seahawks. I really like the Panthers in this one. They looked like they figured something out on Sunday in Atlanta, and boy is that Seattle offense anemic. To me, the Seahawks are due for a fall, and I think the Panthers take this one. Panthers 31, Seahawks 17.

Bears (-5.5) at Jaguars. I have to love the Bears at this number. I heard this morning that the Bears are 4-1 against the spread after Monday Night Football. Bears 30, Jaguars 13.

Patriots (-6.5) over Broncos. The Broncos finally looked good last week, but that was a home game against the Raiders. The Patriots scored 45 points in the second half alone last week, but I just have this feeling Manning and the Broncos keep this close. Patriots 34, Broncos 28.

49ers (-10) over Bills. For a team like the 49ers, 10 points would seem to be a lot. But San Fran did put up 34 last week against the hapless Jets. They have been averaging 26 points per game, and have had just one home game so far. The Bills have had two awful defensive games, and two good ones. I'm trying to talk myself into the Bills here, with the number of course. 49ers 23, Bills 14.

Saints (-3) over Chargers. Really interesting game here. A winless Saints team is a 3-point favorite at home, against a 3-1 team. This is a primetime game, and Drew Brees and that offense sure looked good last week. I don't trust Norv Turner in a high-profile road game, and the Saints are so overdue. This seems like a sucker bet...so call me a sucker. I like the Saints, even with the points.Saints 35, Chargers 31.

Texans (-8.5) over Jets. New York couldn't have looked any worse at home against the 49ers, and the Texans easily defeated the Titans. Zero reason to believe that they would win, but a home dog of that size on a Monday night? I like the Jets with the points.Texans 20, Jets 14.

Let's see how this plays out. Rob, I think you are due for a good old fashioned Bear thumpin.'
