Staman signs with Indianapolis

ROCKTON — Payton Staman spent eight years in tumbling and gymnastics only to discover his true love was on a diving board.

He can thank a former teammate at Hononegah, Hector Vega, for turning him on to the sport.

“He said I should try this diving thing,” Staman said with a chuckle. “I thought, why not? Tumbling should be a good transition to diving with its twists and flips.”

The results speak for themselves.

The junior has not only helped the Indians win three straight NIC-10 Conference titles and sectional crowns, on Wednesday he signed a letter-of-intent to dive for the University of Indianapolis.

Staman said while gymnastics and tumbling gave him the body control to excel in diving, it did come with a major challenge.
