Rockton Road to be closed for two weeks

Rockton Road between Route 2 and Highway 251 will be closed starting Wednesday through Sept. 19 for road improvements.

The road will be resurfaced, a third lane will be added to the middle for drivers turning left and a traffic signal will be installed at Rockton and Dorr roads, said Vir Patel, resident engineer at the Winnebago County Highway Department.

Rockton Road also will receive a seal coating from Wednesday to Thursday, according to a press release from the Winnebago County Highway Department.

Local traffic will be able to access to Rockton Road during its improvements and detours will be set up for other drivers, Patel said.

Drivers in the area should anticipate delays because of the road work, leaving earlier to get where they are going. The Winnebago County Highway Department has handed out over 3,000 notices about the project and talked to residents that will be directly affected one-on-one, Patel said. Additionally, schools and bus companies have been notified about the traffic delays, Rockton Village President Dale Adams said.

The road construction on Rockton Road will not extend east as far as Wal-Mart, so access to the store will not be affected, Patel said.

Improvements on Rockton Road are expected to be complete in two weeks, although the duration of the project depends on the weather, Patel said.

After construction on Rockton Road is done, road work will begin on Dorr Road from Hononegah Road to Prairie Hill Road, Patel said.

Dorr Road will be resurfaced and left turn lanes will be added. The Winnebago County Highway Department is also installing a bike path on the east side of Dorr Road starting from Kelley-Meyers Park and heading north to South Beloit, Adams said.

The entire project costs $2.7 million, Patel said.

The intent is to have the whole project opened and completed by November, Adams said.

The contractor for the project is Rock Road Companies Inc., which is based in Janesville. The subcontractor is Schlichting & Sons Excavating from Rockford, Adams said.
