Town of Beloit emergency crews responded to a series of crashes over the weekend, including two fatal accidents.

John Hull, 55, was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. Friday at the scene of an accident on Afton Road just south of Creedy Road.

According to Town of Beloit Police reports, Hull was driving his Chevrolet S10 pickup truck north on Afton Road. Vickie Helms, 41, of Beloit, also was driving north on Afton Road in her Chevrolet Tahoe and slowed down to turn west onto Creedy Road. Hull's truck struck Helm's vehicle from behind. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Also on Friday evening, Town of Beloit crews were called to the 2800 block of Liberty Avenue for a single vehicle crash at 9:37 p.m. Friday.

Aaron Brookens, 21, of Janesville was eastbound on Liberty Avenue. Brookens reportedly went into the oncoming lane of traffic, left the roadway and struck a tree on the south side of the road. The truck then re-entered the roadway and came to rest facing north in the eastbound lane.

Brookens suffered non-life-threatening injuries to the head and left arm. Brookens was taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital by Town of Beloit ambulance.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash and Brookens was cited for OWI, a first offense.

Town of Beloit crews also were dispatched to Highway 81 just east of Mill Pond Road at 1:10 p.m. Sunday for a single vehicle crash resulting in the death of a Brodhead man.

Tomas Porterfield, 47, of Brodhead, was pronounced dead at the scene by Rock County Coroner's officials.

Crews found a 1998 Mercury Sable at the scene that had rolled over.

According to Town of Beloit Police reports, Porterfield, was driving east on Highway 81 and he apparently attempted to pass another vehicle at a high rate of speed. He lost control and the car rolled over.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, officials said.
