Robert L. ‘Bob' Basford

Mr. Robert L. ‘Bob' Basford, 80, of Beloit, died Monday, October 13, 2008 at Sun Valley North. He was born on December 20, 1927 in Couderay, Wisconsin to Henry and Minnie (Burke) Basford. Mr. Basford married the former Mercedes Steier on April 10, 1945 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He joined the Army in 1946. Mr. Basford worked as a truck driver at Logan trucking for 40 plus years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, RV'ing and flea markets. Mr. Basford was a member of the Beloit Moose, past president of the Eagles Club and was a member of the American Legion in Beloit.

He is survived by his three daughters: Donna (Rev. James) Babler, Wisconsin; Barbara Basford, Illinois; and Patricia (John) Strom of Wisconsin. Three grandchildren: Elizabeth and Erica Babler and Steven (Brenda) Strom. His special companion Margaret Auman.

Preceded in death by his wife, Mercedes, of 44 years, parents, one sister, Rose Martin.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the Floral Lawns Memorial Garden Chapel at 11 a.m. Pastor Dave Meding will officiate. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Rosman, Uehling Kinzer Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m.

Paula Catherine ‘Cathy' Hoffman

Paula Catherine “Cathy” Hoffman, age 42, of W7579 Koshkonong Lake Road, Fort Atkinson, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Cathy was born June 20, 1966 in Tampa, Florida. Cathy attended UW-Marathon County, receiving an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in 1995. She continued her education at UW-Whitewater, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in speech language pathology in 1998. Cathy continued her education, receiving a SLP master's degree in 2000.

Cathy married Richard Earl Hoffman Jr. on May 28, 1988 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, Wis. After 20 years of marriage, they grew to be more in love than ever. Cathy was a member of Fowler Baptist Church in Tampa, Fla., and Amelia Baptist Church in Darby Pasco, Fla.

Cathy was employed by Beloit Rehab Health Center as a speech language pathologist and also worked part time for Cedar Crest Nursing Home and Community Physical Therapy. She started her career working with children but found her true passion in working with the elderly.

Cathy is survived by her children, Andrew Hoffman, Private 1st Class E-3 of Fort Knox, Ky., Joshua (Aygul) Hoffman of Madison, Wis., stepdaughter, Michele (Gerald) Buscher of Mukwonago, Wis.; stepgranddaughter, Noel Jean Buscher of Mukwanago, Wis.; her parents, Charles (Marti) Carver of Live Oak, Fla., and Janice (Al) Angle of Lakeland, Fla.; father-in law, Don Paustenbach of Medford; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Cindy (Jeff) Drost of Beloit, Wis., Tim (Katie) Hoffman of Medford, Wis., Cliff (Tami) Hoffman of Medford, Wis., Todd Hoffman of Weston, Wis., Donna Brahmer of Janesville, Wis. and Steven (Jennie) Paustenbach of Green Bay, Wis. Cathy is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews, and eight great-nieces and nephews.

Cathy was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Amie Hoffman, and a cousin, Cathy Buchanan.

Cathy's love for her husband, children, parents, extended family and friends was unconditional. She was a happy, loving woman who enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved the outdoors, her ducks, and riding bike with her husband. Cathy will be remembered with a hug, a kiss and a tear. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her.

Services were held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at 11 a.m., with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating. Visitation were at Hemer Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday morning from 9 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church until the time of the services.

Richard ‘Rick' Hoffman Jr.

Richard “Rick” Earl Hoffman Jr., age 51, of W7579 Koshkonong Lake Road, Fort Atkinson, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Rick was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, on May 18, 1957. Rick served in the United States Navy from 1974 to 1976, and attended school at the United Electronics Institute of Tampa, Fla., earning an Associate's in Science degree in electronics technology in 1985.

In April of 1983, Rick married Zoraida Castro, who passed away on March 15, 1985.

Rick married Paula Catherine “Cathy” Carver on May 28, 1988 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford.

Rick was employed by Freedom Plastics of Janesville as the plant manufacturing engineer and head of maintenance for 13 years.

Rick is survived by his children, Michele (Gerald) Buscher of Mukwonago, Wis., Joshua (Aygul) Hoffman of Madison, Wis., and Andrew Hoffman, Private 1st Class E-3 of Fort Knox, Ky.; granddaughter, Noel Jean Buscher of Mukwonago, Wis.; stepfather, Don Paustenbach of Medford; and brothers and sisters, Cindy (Jeff) Drost of Beloit, Wis., Tim (Katie) Hoffman of Medford, Wis., Cliff (Tami) Hoffman of Medford, Wis., Todd Hoffman of Weston, Wis., Donna Brahmer of Janesville, Wis., and Steven (Jennie) Paustenbach of Green Bay, Wis. Rick is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews, and eight great-nieces and nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Richard Earl Hoffman, Sr.; mother, Verna Paustenbach; paternal grandfather, Earl Hoffman; maternal grandparents, Thelma Bamberg and John Lightsey; and sister-in-law, Amie Hoffman.

Rick's family was very important to him and the bonds that were formed will never be broken. He took great pride in who he was, and enjoyed his time with his many special friends. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing and the freedom he got from riding his bike. He lived life knowing that one man's fun is another man's sorrow. Rick and Cathy did not sip from the cup of life, they gulped from the jug.

Services were held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at 11 a.m., with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joe Stefancin officiating and military rites performed by the Medford Military Honors Team. Visitation will be at Hemer Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday morning from 9 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church until the time of the services.

Stanley J. Mannino

Stanley J. Mannino, 76, of South Beloit, IL, died Sunday, October 12, 2008 in Swedish American Hospital. He was born April 20, 1932 in Beloit, WI, the son of Joseph and Bessie Kopplin Mannino. Stanley was a graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. Stanley married Stephanie Eldridge.Stanley owned and operated the Ledges Stables for many years. He was also a builder and a real estate developer. Stanley was an owner and sponsor for many teams at the Rockford Speedway. He enjoyed collecting Lionel Trains and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Stephanie Mannino of South Beloit, IL; six children, Vicki (Brian) Haase of Rockton, IL, Debbie (Andy) Renaud of Roscoe, IL, Paul (Michelle) Mannino of Clinton, WI, Mike (Stacy) Mannino of Appleton, WI, Travis (Susan) Eldridge of Rockton, IL, and Jennifer (Mike) Davenport of Rockton, IL; 15 grandchildren, Sarah (Josh) Montgomery, Trina (Traves) Nielcen, Jason Renaud, Amber (fiancé, Brandon) Boan, William and Lily Mannino, Preston and Sam Mannino, Kyle and Kenzi Eldridge, Kassi Kelam, Andrew, Jordan, Madison and Cassidy Davenport; one great granddaughter, Trinidy; brother, Kenneth (Barb) Mannino of Rockford, IL; aunt, Mildred Roeker of Beloit, WI; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, son, Joseph, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Reverend Richard Wagner officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Helen Dorothy (Sommer) Purcell

Helen Purcell, 93, died Saturday, October 11, 2008, surrounded by her loving family in Boise, ID. She was born July 8, 1915 to the late Frank and Auguste (Klingbeil) Sommer in Beloit, where she lived and raised her family. Helen married her loving husband of 68 years, John S. Purcell, on April 25, 1936 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2004. 

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2008 in ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 617 St. Lawrence Avenue, Beloit with the Rev. Roger Elliott officiating. Friends will be received on Thursday at the SCHOENFELD-MARK Funeral Home, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. The cortege will process to East Lawn Cemetery for interment following the service.
